River Keepers, with a mission to advocate for safe and sustainable use of the Red River, would like to get more youth groups out onto the Red River paddling in canoes and kayaks. This could be high school gym classes, scouting groups, summer park youth camps, etc. Each excursion would begin with the basics of canoeing, kayaking and safety. Along the way, a group leader would interpret some of the mysteries of the Red River including water quality, animals and habitats, how rivers move and more. The youth could participate in a scavenger hunt using their senses (except for taste!) to explore the river in their own backyard or in a pre/post hands–on educational activity with a focus of their choice. Many people in our community do not realize how beautiful the Red River is within our downtowns. These excursions would give youth an opportunity to LEARN about the Red River, safely ENJOY the Red River and then hopefully SUSTAIN the Red River in the future. Limitations to doing this in the past has been the cost of vessel rental and bus transportation. Your donation can help youth experience the Red River.
