The Winter Solstice Walk will bring some light and cheer to the longest night of the year. The trail will be lit at 5:30 pm and glow until 8 pm. This is a special way to experience the beauty of a riverfront park in December. Pre-registration is not required.
Start your adventure at the small shelter:
* A welcome greeter will be stationed at the front door.
* Make your own glow in the dark necklace provided by River Keepers.
* Buy a festive headband that lights up to help support the event.
Choose your own adventure: Walk the illuminated paths as many times as you want! The short loop is about a half mile, the longer loop is about a mile.
Things to consider:
* Carpoool!
* Bring your friends and family.
* Dress for the weather.
* Wear comfortable walking shoes.
* Walking sticks are good for winter walking but not necessary.
* Welcome to bring festive lighted necklaces and/or hats!
FAQ:
*Can we bring pets? Yes, Moorhead Parks and Recreation’s guidelines must be followed including leashing and picking up after them.
*I thought the paths would be longer or would be in the trees? M.B. Johnson Park is a wonderful riverfront park. The paths we light up are more accessible for all trail users as they are paved and plowed regularly by the City of Moorhead in the winter.
*How long is the trail? In total, the paved trail at M.B. Johnson Park is about 1.5 miles long. There is the option to walk a smaller loop that is about 0.5 mile long and/or a longer loop that is about 1 mile long. A map will be posted closer to the event on our FB event page. A map will also be available to view at the small shelter at M.B. Johnson Park the day of the event.
*What seating options are available? There are no seating options available inside due to limited space. There are picnic tables available outside the small shelter.
*What are the trail conditions? We will post a video the day of on our Facebook event page showing what the trail looks like. The paved trails are plowed by the City of Moorhead, but wind and snow the day/evening of the event can cause uneven conditions.
